Getting inside the head of an Arcade Collector...
Why Do we Collect these Massive / Old / Hideous / *insert phrase here* Machines...
Basically, Because they are COOL ! - but seriously, many collectors have 1 or 2 favourite machines that they used to play at the arcade when they were kids - and are looking to re-live their child hood.. some are just posers and like to brag about their rare or super collectable machine which they own..
How did you start Collecting these machines ?
Many people start collecting by accident, or by referral via a friend.. many people do not even realise that you can actually buy these machines.. You can buy even the latest machines that you see currently in the arcades.. be prepared to spend as much as a nice new car for the latest machines.. and dont expect a cent of change.. Yes, it is an elite hobby..
Is there a limit to the types of machines you can collect ?
No, only your bank balance or your wife will dictate these terms - You might also consider space.. these machines consume space at a massive rate, with the addiction being nearly fatal.. you can quite easily find yourself climbing over machines in every room of your home, office, garage and anywhere you can stick another machine - Not only will you collect the actual machines, you will find yourself hoarding absolute and unadulterated CRAP - eveything from old buttons to joysticks and sideart.. even for games you have never seen or heard of before, it all will go under the excuses " But I am holding it because it will be worth something in a couple of years " or " I cant throw it out, what if someone needs it " if your addiction grows too great.. seek medical attention..
How can I get my hands on machines ?
Its not really a matter of finding them, its letting people know you are looking for them.. and trying not to sound desperate - the machines will magnetise themselves and attract themselves to you.. believe it or not - most classic finds come from people who know someone who knows someone who might have an old machine sitting in an abandoned warehouse thats not been opened for 25 years.. and its full of immaculate pacman and galaga machines, with lots of minty fresh - if not dusty - pinball machines..
What is the most commonly asked question from noob'ies about machines when they find out you collect.
Do you have GALAGA
Do you have PACMAN
Do you have any pinball machines ?
